5 Tips to succeed with a Raised bed herb garden

Growing your own herb garden can be very satisfying. Herbs look great in the garden either on their own or planted together with other plants so they act as pest repellents. This is what is called companion planting.

A raised bed is perfect for creating a herb garden. It is very easy to maintain and can be moved anywhere.

If you don’t have a raised bed- check out how to make your own.

Herbs can be planted anytime from spring until late Autumn. I plant mine in early Spring. This way I have a harvest mid-summer and then replant again for a later harvest.

That’s the beautiful thing about herbs, they grow very quickly.

1.WHAT HERBS ARE BEST TO PLANT?

You can buy herb seeds from practically any shop. There is plenty to choose from.

Best herbs to grow are Basil, Rosemary, Parsley, Oregano, Thyme and Dill. But that is my opinion, you can grow any herbs of your choice.

All the mentioned herbs are aromatic, great for cooking in sauces and putting into salads.

You can also grind the herbs and store them for later use.

2. SOIL FOR YOUR HERB GARDEN

Plant your herb seeds in rich well draining soil. Herbs are the least picky plants you’ll ever grow.

Add some compost to your soil. Herbs absolutely love this.

Some garden centres sell pot mix, which comes with soil already mixed for you to use in your raised beds or containers.

3. WATER YOUR HERB GARDEN

Like all plants herbs are no exception. They love water especially Basil.

4. SUN- POSITIONING YOUR HERB GARDEN

Where you put your raised bed herd garden should be influenced by the area in your harden that gets the most sunshine.

Some herbs can also grow in partial shade so if you have lots of trees in your garden that cast a shadow, this is the best use of your space.

Herbs need full sun to grow but some will tolerate partial shade. Examples like Parsley will do great in partial shade.

5. ROW PLANT YOUR HERBS

This method of planting is perfect as it makes weeding easy. Plant the herb seeds or seedlings at least 6 inches apart. With my raised bed, I use each section of the bed to plant a different herb.

If you don’t have a raised bed, you can grow your herbs indoors, or in grow bags or straight in the ground in your garden. Not to mention, they make great houseplants.
